One of Jarrett’s most requested works, Romeo and Juliet is a beautiful rendering of overall moods and thematic materials based on Shakespeare’s popular play. The first movement, Prologue, sets the musical mood for the entire work with striking melodies and rich counterpoint. Capulet’s Ball, the second movement, depicts where the lovers meet. The third movement, Love Scene, won the prestigious EDWARD BENJAMIN AWARD. The fourth movement, Street Fight, musically illustrates the provocation and death of Mercutio and Tybalt. Finally, the tragic fate of the star-crossed lovers is evoked in last movement, Epilogue: Juliet’s Tomb. All string sections are divided to create a lush, complex texture.
